Brake Drum Translation

The brake drum (scientific name: brake drum) is the core component of the drum brake system. It is usually fixed coaxially with the wheel hub and rotates synchronously. It converts kinetic energy into thermal energy through friction between its inner wall and the brake shoes, so as to realize vehicle deceleration or parking.

Structure and Material

Structure

It is in a closed drum/barrel shape, with the inner side serving as the friction working surface. Arc-shaped brake shoes are installed inside, and the shoe linings are pushed outward to cling to the drum wall by a hydraulic/pneumatic mechanism.

Mainstream Materials

HT250 gray cast iron: It has high wear resistance, good thermal conductivity and thermal fatigue resistance.

Alloy cast iron containing chromium: It is adopted for heavy-duty vehicles to enhance performance.

Working Principle

Press the brake pedal → Hydraulic/pneumatic pressure pushes the wheel cylinder

Brake shoes expand outward → Brake linings come into close contact with the inner wall of the brake drum to generate huge friction

The friction hinders wheel rotation to achieve deceleration/parking

When the pedal is released, the return spring pulls the brake shoes back and the friction is eliminated
